Myra Byrd owns an interior design firm in Houston, Texas and is a full-time mother of six. She has three adult children and three still living at home, which she shares with her husband, a partner in a prominent Houston law firm. She brought three children into their marriage inn 1998, Michael brought one. They then had a daughter, followed by a son, who was prenatally diagnosed as 47,XYY. That is when her intense involvement and contribution to the community of those with extra X and Y chromosomes began. As time permits, Myra also does freelance writing, volunteers at her children’s schools, and serves in various leadership roles in her church and community.
Myra attended the Mississippi University for Women’s School of Nursing and the Atlantic Coast Institute, where she received her degree in paralegal studies.
Reflecting on her experience, she says, “Though no parent chooses for their child to be ‘abnormal,’ we now feel that Andrew’s XYY makes him special. We can’t see the future, but we believe the Chinese proverb, ‘Within every difficulty lies opportunity.’ Out of gratitude, we are committed to educating and assisting others in the hope that all persons with X and/or Y chromosome anomalies have a bright future.”
